چکیده

With increasing age, there is functional impairment of the gastrointestinal tract which is also aggravated by the various co-morbidities and adverse effect of many medications 1. On the whole, there is reduced or impaired co-ordination of contraction of the muscular wall of the various parts of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to various types of mobility problems 2. The dramatic increase in life expectancy over the last 10 15 years demands that clinicians be aware of all these problems 3.

Human prokinetic drugs promote gastrointestinal motility in zebrafish.

BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders are highly prevalent in populations worldwide and the development of effective and safe drug treatments for GI motility disorders has proven challenging. In this study, taking advantage of the transparency of larval zebrafish, we developed a novel zebrafish GI motility model for drug screening and efficacy assessment. METHODS Zebrafish at 5 ...

مانومتری با قدرت تفکیک بالا در افتراق اختلالات حرکتی مری

Background: High-resolution manometer (HRM) of the esophagus has become the main diagnostic test in the evaluation of esophageal motility disorders. The development of high-resolution manometry catheters and software displays of manometry recordings in color-coded pressure plots have changed the diagnostic assessment of esophageal disease. The first step of the Chicago classification described ...

Mechanisms of Electrical Activation and Conduction in the Gastrointestinal System: Lessons from Cardiac Electrophysiology

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is an electrically excitable organ system containing multiple cell types, which coordinate electrical activity propagating through this tract. Disruption in its normal electrophysiology is observed in a number of GI motility disorders. However, this is not well characterized and the field of GI electrophysiology is much less developed compared to the cardiac fiel...

Constitutively Active 5-HT Receptors: An Explanation of How 5-HT Antagonists Inhibit Gut Motility in Species Where 5-HT is Not an Enteric Neurotransmitter?

Antagonists of 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors are well known to inhibit gastrointestinal (GI)-motility and transit in a variety of mammals, including humans. Originally, these observations had been interpreted by many investigators (including us) as evidence that endogenous 5-HT plays a major role in GI motility. This seemed a logical assumption. However, the story changed dramatically af...
